Alarms are an important part of how operators or users know what is happening on the system. They should inform about events and circumstances that require a timely response. Unfortunately, alarms are often badly specified and implemented, which means they become a distraction rather than a help.
I acted as lead author of the 4th edition of guidance document EEMUA 191, which was published in 2024. Below are a few papers I have had published as a result of that work.
2025 The Ergonomist – No cause for alarm
2025 Hazards 35 Alarm management – update to EEMUA 191
2024 EEMUA Conference – The New EEMUA 191 4th edition
2023 Hazards 33 Jump to it – alarm response times
There are a couple of videos on Youtube featuring me talking about alarm management.
