Human factors has tools and deeper understanding that could be used to drive fundamental improvement in the way work is performed. This goes well beyond looking at the circumstances in which is carried out (Performance Influencing Factors) to critically examining task methods. Where Recognised Good Practice (RGP) exists it should be reviewed as an integral part of any task analysis. Where it does not exist or is considered irrelevant or inappropriate we still need a benchmark to decide if work is being carried out as well as it could be. In the process industry we have the Hierarchy of Risk Controls, which can be used for this as part of a pragmatic consideration of whether risks are As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). Other industries may require other methods of reverting to first principles of risk management.
